Yesterday we touched on Ryan Adams’ unfortunate accident prone ways. Today we’ll ignore the Carolina klutz and his history of slippery spills and focus on that damn good music he also has a refreshing habit of putting out. Recently the good folks at Lost Highway released two tracks off of Ryan’s upcoming album, Easy Tiger. While these are but frustrating snippets, the songs offer a pretty good indication of where Ryan is going with his 9th solo release.

Imagine yourself at the not quite ripe age of 22, kicking off shows for the likes of Rufus Wainwright, Magic Numbers, Neko Case, and Sean Lennon. It’s a fairytale kind of story, but one Alison Sudol, aka A Fine Frenzy, finds herself at the center of the plot to. This summer, the recent Virgin Records signee will be hitting the roads in support of both the singing/songwriting behemoths she will be opening for, and her record One Cell in the Sea.

When it comes to Ryan Adams, even gripping a freshly printed ticket between your firm little fingers is never a sure bet you’ll ever get to see the Heartbreaker do what he does live. Few musicians can lay claim to the endless list of gig-killing circumstances that have befallen Adams over the years. Wicked wrist injuries, tumbles off the stage, Japanese Flu bugs, infected cysts in the ear canal…It’s safe to call Ryan a tour manager’s worst nightmare.

So when we heard the singer got mixed up with a skateboard, a twelve foot concrete bowl, and a newly torn ligament…we figured it was once again time to tear up some tickets.

But, thanks to the fine guitar work of Neal Casal, the show will go on. Phew…we thought we’d have to fire up the shredder once again…

August 21st might be many months off. ‘Course that doesn’t mean you need to sweat out the summer without hearing any new material from Vancouver’s rousing pop outfit (I hear they are a super group…), The New Pornographers. Why, just today we got word that the fine folks at Matador are offering up an initial taste of what’s to come.

Also, the label has teamed up with a variety of retail outlets to offer its’ fourth installment of “Buy Early Get Now”. Every band should have a proper place to call home. And for veteran Merge recording artists The Ladybug Transistor, that comfort lies in their fabled, Victorian Brooklyn headquarters, Marlborough Farms. A gathering place for musicians Ladybug has befriended over the years, the space recently played host to a plenty of quality collaborations…the results of which can be heard on the band’s latest album, Can’t Wait Another Day.

Featuring warm contributions from members of Aislers Set, Architecture in Helsinki, The Clientele, Jens Lekman, Kevin Barker (Vetiver), Heather McIntosh (Circulatory System) and others, the release of Can’t Wait Another Day is a gloriously conceived collection of harmonious pop music that hopefully offers singer/songwriter Gary Olson and the rest of the band a chance to move on from the tragic death of drummer San Fadyl, back in April of ‘07.

Can’t Wait Another Day will be available starting June 5th, 2007.

After striking himself a pile of critical paydirt with his affectionate debut Ash Wednesday (XL Recordings), LA troubadour Elvis Perkins is celebrating part of the summer of ‘07 by hitting the twisted, broken roads winding wildly across America. Beginning June 11th on the muddy banks of the Potomic River, Perkins will take his Nick Drake/Leonard Cohen/Jeff Mangum evoking brand of literate folk music on a mighty cross-country romp.

For those interested in hearing Perkins stripped down to glorious acoustic simplicity, Baeble recommends you catch the first leg of the tour; a solo route charted with Joan Armatrading in support.

It’s hard to believe that the beastly boys in Baltimore/Brooklyn’s renowned Animal Collective are now seven strong albums into what is shaping up to be one heck of an appealing career. But come September, this will certainly be the case when the band unveils Strawberry Jam (Domino Recording Company). Penned over the course of the last two years in various global layovers, the album first came to realization in Sept. 2005 while the band was preparing to tour Europe in support of Feels. Described in big generic terms like “emotional” and “raw”, Strawberry Jam was set to tape under the guidance of Scott Colburn in the middle of the Arizona dessert. Confessing the sound might have been influenced by “Tecate drinking, barbecues, Javelina sightings and other desert oddities” Strawberry Jam sounds like another fine record from the collective. Too bad we still have to wait four months to hear it!

It would be a stout hard sell someone would be relying upon if they were to ever try and convince me that Okkervil River’s magnificent ’05 release, Black Sheep Boy, received its’ just due. Released at a time when the rest of the world was oohing and ahhhing over The Arcade Fire’s brilliant debut (Believe me, I was to…Sadly, I didn’t discover BSB until a boozy evening eight months after its’ release), the passionate, bitter, raw, emotional storytelling that Will Sheff filled the songs of Black Sheep Boy with were, undoubtedly, swept underneath the rug to make way for Win Butler and company.

So, in an effort to make sure this kind of thing never, ever, ever happens again to Okkervil River, consider this my first attempt to bang the drum for the Austin band. Set for an August 7th release, The Stage Names “dynamites the walls of Black Sheep Boy's gothic, moss-walled castle from the inside to let in the glaring sun.” A bright and sunny Will Sheff? The same man who hypothesized about the death of the president? Well, I can’t wait to hear it…

The inability to relate: It is probably what stops most folks from ever really attempting to challenge something that seems bigger than themselves. Luckily, Perry Farrell can’t count this as a problem. And it is his ability to connect the dots between what he sees as an endlessly growing problem threatening the globe, and how it affects his everyday life, that could make the planet a better place to live down the road.

“The world is in poor shape…I am an extreme sports athlete. And I can tell you, this year, there was less snow on those mountains than ever before…The ski and snowboard industry had extreme troubles…When I go surfing, the water reports say the quality is consistently poor, if not toxic…These are things I never thought about when I was a kid. But guess what. It is our responsibility.”

With this obligation squarely on his mind, Farrell set out 3 and a half years ago to work on building a myth from a “playful idea” spawned on a surfboard in the Pacific. Recruiting Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme, and a handful of other influential helping hands (Flea, Thievery Corporation, Hybrid, Fergie, to name a few), Farrell’s “Satellite Party” represents the latest chapter in Farrell’s ever-growing legacy. Highlighted by an unreleased Jim Morrison vocal track…the first unheard Morrison performance in almost thirty years…”Satellite Party” is a fully realized, astonishing blend of rock, electro, urban beats, and symphonic elements that will no doubt further cement Farrell’s status as one of the world’s true artistic visionaries.

But it is Farrell’s underlying humanistic endeavor that separates the “Satellite Party” project from anything he has ever attempted to do. Dubbed, the “Solution Revolution”, Farrell now finds himself at the forefront of a growing, movement tackling global warming by embracing the power of new media and the internet. To accomplish this Farrell has gathered a diverse brain trust of artists, musicians, philanthropists, investors and environmentalists he feels have the solutions to the global warming crisis. “They are not waiting for Fox News to get their point across…It is a do it yourself revolution.”

One such player, GLOBAL COOL, is leading the way by committing to ten years worth of sponsored events to raise awareness. Not only that, Global Cool – who happen to be one of the largest hedge fund investment firms in the world – intends to cast its’ vote for change by agreeing to invest in companies committed to going green, and boycotting those notorious environmental offenders. It is an environmental attack on the market…One Farrell is convinced he and his colleagues can win. “If we have solutions, how can they stop us?” Additionally, the company specializes in educational programs to help both individuals and companies learn how they can personally reduce their own energy omissions.

“This sounds like a very serious subject, but that is why they have me. To me, a Utopian society, is a playful society…we make sure that our play is as thought-out and as important as our work”.

Last night, Push Play Episode 3 went down at Luna Lounge, with two amazing live performances by DEAD COMBO and YOUNG LORDS. They equally rocked the stage with the crowd cheering them on in excitement. Guest DJs Jake and Brendon James (Smash It Up Sundays) spun tons of classic rock n' roll, 50's olidies, and punk, and got the crowd up and dancing all night. A big thanx to Luna Lounge, Rob, Luna's Staff, Felipe, Roger, Chris, Mike, Dead Combo, Young Lords, Jake, Brendon, Maureen and to everyone who came out to the show!

On Monday night, we filmed an awesome show at Bowery Ballroom w/ MANDO DIAO, POP LEVI, and THE FILMS! (Look for the Mando Diao show on our site in a few weeks.) By the end of each full set, all three bands were sweaty messes of rock n' roll and steamy lust mixed w/ stories of margaritas and more...(only Allison H and our Green Room crew know what we're talking about).

A late afternoon post, but one that has us inclined to boast a bit… With a much needed cup of coffee in hand, we here at the Baeble Blog still find ourselves rejuvenating from the combination of sweat, guts, grit, attitude, decibels, and bands that besieged us last evening. Playing party host to a Herculean triple-bill, THE BOWERY BALLROOM welcomed THE FILMS, POP LEVI, and MANDO DIAO to its’ stage last evening. Baeble Blog was there to witness it. Were you?



Kicking the evening off in sporty fashion, Baeble favorites THE FILMS (whom you may remember from our SXSW FEATURE) rolled their way through a tidy, yet ultimately searing mash up of wonderfully diverse influences. American rock of the 50s, British pop of the 60s, 70’s glam and punk, 80’s new wave…these swaggerin’ Southerners channeled all the best bits of rock and roll’s fabled past, and unleashed it on a crowd that was probably hoping to just settle into the show. Too bad…

Next up, POP LEVI…a 60s throwback with a dashing name… poured acid laced retro rock out of The Bowery’s speakers. Whipping up furiously fuzzy bass lines, a drummer blessed with a killer instinct, and cut throat guitar work, the man from Liverpool sent the club awash into a hazy, psychedelic freak out. Pop Levi’s onstage theatrics may have had the performer channeling a Super Bowl performing Prince. But the pulsating music he and his somewhat campy band mates churned out sounded born of bands like Cream and Blue Cheer.



Finally…While historically, they might have been critically overlooked in favor of bands like The Strokes and The Hives, MANDO DIAO have always made it a paramount point to cater themselves to the dearly devoted fan base they have managed to rack up over the years. Not surprisingly, last evening’s show validated yet another reason to believe these robust looking Swedes pack substance behind their irresistible style. On stage well over an hour, the band married a tightly knit sound with epic song writing, and a celebratory stage presence. They probably don’t need a chip on their shoulder. But if enough of one is there, they just might find that their impassioned audience will keep growing…at a time when most of the contemporaries they burst onto the scene with can’t be found.

While I know it is only May, the Baeble Blog can personally declare 2007 to be a real humdinger of a year…at least musically speaking. From The Shins popping the cork on the New Year back in January, to Feist’s latest a few weeks back, so far, the year that has been (Arcade Fire, Andrew Bird, Bloc Party, Bright Eyes, Menomena, Modest Mouse, Elliott Smith), has been undeniably rewarding.

And yet, for all the high profile releases that have found their way to our ears this year, we’ve had May 15th circled in thick red sharpie since the very beginning. Starting tomorrow, Wilco’s celebrated sixth studio release, Sky Blue Sky (Nonesuch), will be precisely propped up on record shelves the world over. To celebrate, the band is feeling festive; hosting a variety of soirees that should have even the most devoted of Wilco fans in a bit of a tizzy.

Old news now, but definitely worth throwing out there… Sky Blue Sky is currently streaming in its’ entirety over at the band’s webpage. Can’t wait until tomorrow? Hear the record today, HERE.

Last Saturday the band set up camp with Garrison Keeler on the shores of Lake Wobegon…or Minneapolis’ State Theater…for a taping of A Prairie Home Companion. Chatting with Keeler along the way, the band played through five songs for the NPR crowd. If you didn’t find yourself gathered ‘round the radio last weekend, you can hear the performance HERE.

In addition to releasing Sky Blue Sky, the band will also mark Tuesday May 15th with an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. Check your local listings…

Sunday May 20th, and Monday May 21st, the band will be webcasting their shows at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire. Sunday’s webcast will be available exclusively through a link on the Sky Blue Sky CD. Fans can see Monday’s by opening up the Wilco “Roadcase”.

Finally, Wilco will be winding across America when the domestic leg of their world tour gets rolling on June 13th in Davenport IA. Details on the entire tour, below:
